Some castles have vanished without a trace, or with only a fragment of masonry to mark the location of a once great castle. Here is a listing of some of these castles.
Aberafan Castle located in Aberafan Wales: The last vestiges were levelled over a hundred years ago (1895), and houses were built over the site.
Aberedw Castle located in Powys Wales: Built over for a railway in the 19th century. The stones were used as track ballast.
Ampthill Castle located in Bedfordshire England: A cross marks the spot of the castle. The castle was built by Sir John Cornwall in the 15th century.
Ashperton Castle located in Herefordshire England: Only the moat remains of this castle licensed in 1292.
Baginton Castle located in Warwickshire England: Only the collapsed undercroft remains.
Baynards Castle located in London England: Succumbed to the flames of the Great Fire in 1666 and nothing is left.
Begelly Castle located in Pembrokeshire Wales: The last traces of this motte and bailey castle have been removed.
Berwick Castle located in Northumberland England: The remains were swept away in 1850 to make room for a railway station.
Bolebec Castle located in Buckinghamshire England: All traces of masonry have vanished. It was built by Hugh de Bolebec.
Bonville's Castle located in Pembrokeshire Wales: The castle lies buried in a waste tip.
Bourne Castle located in Lincolnshire England: The motte has been flattened and no masonry survives. Founded by Baldwin, Count of Brionne before 1100.
Bradley Hall located in CO Durham England: Only the undercroft survives of this fortified manor built in 1431.
Braybrooke Castle located in Northamptonshire England: Only the moat remains of the castle.
Buckingham Castle located in Buckinghamshire England: The motte was flattened in 1777 to make way for a parish church.
Burgh Castle located in Suffolk England: The motte was levelled in 1839.
Buttercrambe located in Yorkshire England. The site has been destroyed by modern construction.
Castell Cwm Aran located in Powys Wales. All traces of the site has vanished.
Castell Dol-Wilf located in Ceredigion Wales. The last traces of this site were removed in 1968.
Castle Morris located in Pembrokeshire Wales: Nothing now remains of this motte and bailey castle.
Charlton Castle located in Shropshire England: Only the moat remains.
Coventry Castle located in Warwickshire England: Cathedral Lanes shopping centre was built over the position of the 11th century castle erected by Roger Marmion.
Deddington Castle located in Oxfordshire England: The 12th century site is now a playing field and nothing is visible of the fortified manor.
Donington Castle located in Leicestershire England: The 12th century site has been built over.
Dorchester Castle located in Dorset England: The site was cleared in 1364 to make way for a friary.
Downton Castle located in Wiltshire England: Nothing remains of this castle built by Henry de Blois.
Ennor Castle located in Scilly Isles England: Only fragments of walling remain.
Frodsham Castle located in Cheshire England: The stones from the castle were used to build Castle Park house.
Fulbroke Castle located in Warwickshire England: Nothing remains of this castle built by John, Duke of Bedford.
Granville's Castle located in Neath Wales: Built by Richard de Granville around 1130. It was dismantled by monks and was no more by 1207.
Greasley Castle located in Nottinghamshire England: Only a bit of curtain wall survives incorporated in the outbuildings of a farm. It was a stronghold of the Cantilupes.
Greenhalgh Castle located in Lancashire England: All that remains of this castle, licensed in 1490 and built by Thomas Stanley, is one piece of tower.
Groby Castle located in Leicestershire England: The castle has disappeared under roadworks.
Hanley Castle located in Worcestershire England: Nothing remains of this quadrangular moated site.
Heaton Castle located in Northumberland England: Only the vaulted undercroft survives.
Heighley Castle located in Staffordshire England: Only fragments of walling remain.
Hereford Castle located in Herefordshire England: Nothing is left of the castle and the motte has been levelled.
Holt Castle located in Wrexam Wales: There is very little left to see of the castle. It was demolished in the 17th century and the stone used in the construction of Eaton Hall in Cheshire.
Kirby Fleetham Castle located in Yorkshire England: All that remains of this castle, licensed in 1314, is a couple of pieces of wall.
Latham House located in Lancashire England: Marked by an 18th century mansion built over the site. The castle was built by Thomas Stanley.
Lavendon Castle located in Buckinghamshire England: The 12th century motte was levelled during WWII.
Leconfield Castle located in Yorkshire England: Only the moated enclosure survives of this Percy stronghold licensed in 1308.
Little Newcastle located in Pembrokeshire Wales: All traces of the castle were removed in 1965.
Liverpool Castle located in Liverpool England: The castle was torn down during the Commonwealth.
Llanidloes Castle located in Powys Wales: The motte top has been levelled and built upon. Mound Inn occupies the bailey and portions of the motte.
Maenclochog Castle located in Pembrokeshire Wales: Nothing is left of this motte and baily castle.
Malmesbury Castle located in Wiltshire England: Nothing is left of this castle built by Roger de Caen.
Malton Castle located in Yorkshire England: Nothing is left of this castle that once occupied a Roman fort site.
Membury Castle located in Wiltshire England: The castle was destroyed to make a landing strip during WWII.
Midhurst Castle located in Sussex England: There is nothing left of this stone castle once located on St. Ann's Hill.
Myddle Castle located in Shropshire England: Only a fragment of stair turret survives.
Northallerton Castle located in Yorkshire England: The castle has been destroyed by 19th century railway works. It was built in 1068.
Northampton Castle located in Northamptonshire England: A railway station was built over the site in 1845. The castle was built by Simon de Senlis in 1100.
Penyard Castle located in Herefordshire England: Only the 14th century undercroft remains in a ruined house.
Red Castle located in Shropshire England: Only scant fragments remain.
Richmont Castle located in Somerset England: All that is left are fragments of walling.
Ruan Laniharne Castle located in Cornwall England: Only a portion of wall remains of this 14th century castle that had numerous towers.
Sandown Castle located in Isle of Wight England: The castle was washed away by the sea and a Victorian fort occupies the site.
Sanddown Castle located in Kent England: The castle has been washed away by the sea except for a fragment of the outer wall.
Sentence Castle located in Pembrokeshire Wales: Only a section of ditch remains of this castle.
Shotwick Castle located in Cheshire England: Nothing is left of this castle built by Runulf de Blundeville.
Shoreham Castle located in Kent England: Only a piece of wall incorporated into a farmhouse survives.
Sigston Castle located in Yorkshire England: Only the moated enclosure remains.
Stamford Castle located in Lincolnshire England: In 1932 the motte was levelled to make way for a car park. Only scattered fragments of masonry remain.
Stapleton Castle located in Herefordshire England: The motte was levelled in in the 17th century to build a mansion.
Starborough Castle located in Surrey England: Only the moat remains of this castle licensed in 1341.
Strensham Castle located in Worcestershire England: Only the moat survives of this castle licensed in 1388.
Stoke Castle located in Shropshire England: Only the remains of a moat marks its location.
Sully Castle located in Cardiff Wales: Houses were built over the site in the 1970's. It was built by Walter de Sully in the 12th century.
Thorpe Waterville Castle located Northamptonshire England: The site is occupied by a farmhouse. It was a moated site licensed in 1301 and built by Walter de Langton.
Trowbridge Castle located in Wiltshire England: The site was sold off in lots in 1812. The center of the castle is somewhere in the area now covered by The Shires Shopping Center, probably under the Home Mill building.
Wakefield Castle located in Yorkshire England: Modern intrusions have destroyed the site.
Walton Castle located in Suffolk England: The remnants of this 12th century castle have been undermined by the sea.
Warrington Castle located in Lancashire England: No visual evidence remains of the site. The castle stood at the edge of what is now St. Elphins Park.
West Derby located in Merseyside England: A courthouse stands on this castle site built in 1086 by Roger of Poitou.
Widdrington Castle located in Northumberland England: This tower house has vanished.
Wisbech Castle located in Cambridgeshire England: The castle built by William the Conqueror and the 17th century mansion built over the site have been destroyed.
Worcester Castle located in Worcestershire England: There is nothing left of this castle built in 1069. The motte was levelled in 1830.
